Automotive Brake Disc Castings

Brakes are very important in the operation of any vehicle. A brake rotor is the large metal disc located behind the wheels of a vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed down, a caliper presses the brake pads against the rotor. This friction is what causes the wheel to slow and the vehicle to come to a stop. This friction also creates heat that must escape from the braking system to maintain effective stopping power.

Materials of Brake Rotor

Brakes are very important in the operation of any vehicle. A brake rotor is the large metal disc located behind the wheels of a vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed down, a caliper presses the brake pads against the rotor. This friction is what causes the wheel to slow and the vehicle to come to a stop. This friction also creates heat that must escape from the braking system to maintain effective stopping power.

Brake rotors can be made from many different materials. Each material has its own effect on the performance of the rotor. Some brake rotors use different design methods, such as piercing the rotor in different patterns, for high-performance upgrades to vehicle braking systems. The ideal brake rotor is usable in any weather, no matter if it is rainy or sunny. It also has the capability to easily and quickly dissipate heat from the friction of the pads rubbing against its surface.

Brake Rotor Construction

The construction of a brake rotor plays a large part in how it performs. Different brake rotors use combinations of different materials and designs to modify their achievements, and their prices.

Materials
There are six different main types of materials used to make brake rotors. Each type has its own nuances, making it ideal for different applications.

Cast Iron

Many are made from a solid piece of metal. If used in high-performance situations, the part of the rotor that makes contact with the brake pads may heat too much and expand the entire rotor, which causes cracking and brake failure. An upgrade to this type of rotor is available which uses a cast iron outer ring and aluminum inner area, which allows for free expansion.
